Bank Of Canada Announces Quarter-Point Interest Rate Cut

The Bank of Canada lowered its policy interest rate to 4.5 per cent Wednesday morning, a quarter-point cut. It’s the second straight rate cut from the central bank. The central bank cited weaker consumer spending, rising unemployment and easing inflationary pressures as factors in its decision....

Saugeen Shores Rotary Club Accessible Playground Now Open

The Town of Saugeen Shores has celebrated the opening of the Saugeen Shores Rotary Club accessible playground. The ceremony also marked the completion of Phase 2 development for the Lamont Sports Park where the playground sits. Saugeen Shores Mayor Luke Charbonneau says the opening of the playground marks the successful of the Lamont Sports Park’s phase 2 development and the fulfillment of the vision which began when they won the Kraft Heinz Project Play in 2019....

NBP Approves Harbour Electrical Work Contracts

Northern Bruce Peninsula is awarding over $600,000 in contracts for electrical work at the harbours in Tobermory and Lion’s Head. Council approved the tenders to Clark Multi-Trade during a meeting on July 22. The work will include upgrading the existing service, modify and replace various cables, and install new equipment, which will result in pavement getting dug up....

Huron County Gaol Behind the Bars Tour Returns

Behind the Bars is back at the Huron County Gaol. The tour experience allows visitors to speak with actors who portray real people who were in or worked at the gaol when it was in operation from 1841-1924. For the rest of July and August, visitors can take part in the tour as well as volunteers who want to help out also being encouraged to join in....

Public Health Urging Food Safety Over the Summer

Huron Perth Public Health is reminding the public to practice food safety over the summer. While many head outdoors to the beach, go camping or just have a get together in the backyard, public health says food needs to the safely stored and served to avoid any illness. Public Health Inspector Chris Boyes says its not uncommon to see an increase in food borne illness cases such as salmonella over the summer months....

Brockton has appointed a new deputy mayor, following the resignation of James Lang from council. Councillor Kym Hutcheon was sworn in as deputy mayor July 9. Lang resigned from the deputy mayor’s seat following a third-party investigation and integrity commissioner’s report that asserted Lang had contravened a number of provisions of the code of conduct with his behaviour during a Walkerton Capitals hockey game on Dec. 16, 2023....

Proposed Port Elgin Renovation Looks To Add Apartments

A developer is looking to add over a dozen apartment units onto an existing building at the south end of Port Elgin. The building currently consists of four second-storey apartments and commercial space below including Huron-Bruce MP Ben Lobb’s office at 5101 Highway 21. They would be a mix of one and two-bedroom apartments.
The developer is proposing to build an addition which would house 13 new residential units and one additional business. They would be on two floors, above and behind the existing building....

Survey Looks At Grey Bruce Immigration Experience

A report to Grey County council looks at survey results from 120 immigrants in Grey Bruce and outlines what their challenges and highlights have been in living in the region. The big challenges have been finding healthcare, followed by accessing programs and recreation, followed by childcare services. 41 per cent of survey respondents said making new friends was a challenge....
